The Wandering Magus

2012 Jun 04, 23:41:14 Last Edit: 2012 Nov 23, 23:58:29 by The Wandering Magus
I thought all the fine ponies with whom i have had the privilege of roleplaying might appreciate a little thread to list my many characters, so here it is.  Please give me your questions and comments below!

Note: Short version for magitronics: think spell engine, one spell building on another on another, chain of events, magical machine, etc.  Like dominoes, but with magic.  Needs to be carefully set up if the set/effect is large.  Want more details? scroll to the bottom and you'll get more details, or check out the Royal Academy of Magic RP and do a search for Magitronics.

Species:Unicorn

Gender:Stallion

Age:28

Physique:Somewhat frail

Cutie Mark:Lightning-blue feather and purple-rune-covered silk scroll

Talent:Interactions between various forms of magics; can build matrices incorporating a variety of spells, potions and runes on the fly

Mane Color:Soft Pink

Mane Style:Wavy and somewhat long, partially covering one eye (in the shy sort of way)

Coat Color:Light blue

Eye Color:Pink

Magic Color:Purple

Occupation:Research in universally accessible magic, magic storage, spell matrices and Alchemy-Magic interactions; Professor at the Royal Academy of Magic

Personality Traits:Generally shy and gentle, but can get assertive in stressful situations. Can go into OCD-mode when researching, but otherwise is very flexible and accommodating.

Other Information:Is fluent and literate in ancient Equestrian, has a passing knowledge of Draconic, is an artist and cartographer as a hobby, can play the flute, decent cook, lives with Juniper Blossom, has passing knowledge of Zebra alchemy

Biography:Feather Scroll began his life as  the son of Lightning Scroll, a professor at the Royal Academy of Magic in Canterlot.  His upper-middle-class family lived in a moderately large two-story house in the suburbs nearby the Academy with a view of the city's artificial lake and park.  Although certainly the young colt spent time among his peers, the young Feather was more inclined to stay at home playing his flute or in the library reading books rather than going to dinner parties or visiting friends.  Lightning, a proponent of pony equality and pioneer in the theory of unified magic, nevertheless encouraged his son to spend time with ponies of all socioeconomic classes, and the colt learned to appreciate having a few friends.  As expected, the unicorn proved talented enough to enter the School for Gifted Unicorns, and graduated with average scores, a cutie mark, and a few more close friends with whom he would often spend time researching or philosophising later as a student at the Royal Academy.  There, he managed to develop the first theories for inter-magical forces.  He earned his doctorate pioneering research and development in and founding the new field of magitronics.  His father assisted in overseeing the budding research team dedicated to the field, and continues to manage the Canterlot division.  To fund his research, Feather interned with his father's department and taught classes, becoming a professor in the field he founded at the Academy.  To the surprise of some of the canterlot elite, he also moved to the small town of Ponyville on the outskirts of the Everfree Forest to research the local zebra's alchemy as well as the location's effects on magical devices.  During the course of his early career, the young Feather did not have much time for social events, but eventually his friends and neighbors convinced him to go to the Summer Sun Celebration with them.  There, chance had him meet with the carpenter Juniper Blossom during an impromptu musical ensemble he was persuaded to join, and the pair's relationship began.  It soon developed into quite a close kinship, and so with the approval of both the Scroll and Blossom families the two were quietly married several years later.  The couple lives in a decent home nestled comfortably between the Forest and the town's center, a few minutes' walk from the Ponyville Library in one direction and the market square in the other.

/>Optional mane six relationships:
Spoiler: show
He has a casual but friendly relationship with the Ponyville Librarian and her Assistant, as well as the local Clothing Designer, who provides him with embroidered rune matrices and exotic fabrics for constructing his research devices.  He is popularly known among Ponyville citizens as "Magus" due to a rather embarrassing remark made by the hyperactive resident Confections Maker on his job and talent during the "welcome party" she threw for him.  He nevertheless will answer to the nickname cheerfully and without much comment.  He has had the local Weather Captain perform as a research subject on occasion for his studies and keeps a professional relationship with her.  He is casual friends with the local shy Animal Caretaker after being introduced by Juniper, despite nopony being able to hear more than squeaks on both ends whenever they talk.

Species:Earth Pony

Gender:Mare

Age:25

Physique:Strong and hardy but decently shaped

Cutie Mark:A stump carved into a beautiful portrait surrounded by sprouting flowers and vegetables.

Talent:Woodworking

Mane Color:Light brown with streaks of darker brown

Mane Style:Long and flowing naturally, but usually braided and to one side.

Coat Color:Soft Green

Eye Color:Brownish-Green

Occupation:Carpenter/woodworker/gardener; her stand in the square sells both fresh edible plants and various wood tools and toys.

Personality Traits:Gentle, but firm. Good at bartering but prefers to get trading over with and spend the rest of the time making small talk with the regulars. Occasionally gives out dolls and toys to foals for free. A good friend to have a conversation with and the wrong pony to try to swindle.

Other Information:Carves toys, tools, furniture, accessories, instruments and any number of other items from various types of wood ranging from basic Rowan to Holly and Yew. Also does gardening on the side, growing all manner of small vegetables and edible flowers not already covered by the rest of the market. She chooses not to compete with other merchants and in exchange has somewhat of a stranglehold on the woodworking market. Can play the guitar. Lives with Feather Scroll.

Biography:Juniper Blossom was born the middle child of the humble Blossom family, the daughter of a farmer and a carpenter.  The family trade mostly involved the growing and selling of flowers of all sorts, although occasionally a few pieces of woodwork might make its way to market when the harvests were down.  The farm was adjacent to the small town of Ponyville, where Juniper would help sell the harvests or attend Ponyville Elementary after the Running of the Leaves.  The entire family was very orthodox in every sense of the term, and from an early age Juniper learned much of the history of Equestria and the power of the Princesses.  In addition to her education and trade, the young filly was also taught to attend every Summer Sun Celebration in honor of Celestia.  As time drew on, and Juniper earned her cutiemark whittling an entire replica of Equestria out of a stump in the middle of one of the flower fields with nothing more than a small knife, it became apparent that her talent would not follow that of her siblings, but rather the woodworking side of the family.  To properly learn the trade, the filly was placed in the apprenticeship of her uncle, who lived in Ponyville proper.  There in her uncle's workshop she learned all there was to know about carpentry, and in time she became an expert of the craft.  She took over the establishment after her uncle stepped down and went on to corner the woodworking business in the town through shrewd economic maneuvering and deals with various competitors.  It happened that around this time the young Juniper met Feather during an impromptu ensemble she participated in during the annual Summer Sun Celebration.  After a few encounters, the pair became close friends, and in time, lovers.  Fortunately. her family approved of the young Feather, and the couple were quietly wed some years later, with Juniper taking temporary leave of her shop as she moved into the new residence purchased and built by the couple.  Some other merchants criticize her for her strict shop policies and attitude on barter, but she insists that what's important is getting to know the customer's needs, not haggling for more money than what the product's really worth.  She occasionally answers to "Juni" from longtime customers, but prefers "Ms. Blossom", "Ms. Juniper" or just "Juniper".

Optional Mane Six relations:
Spoiler: show
She is a regular supplier of wood accessories and decorations for the local Clothing Designer, and struck up a friendship with the shy Animal Caretaker after vigorously defending her right to be exactly the next in line at her booth in front of a crowd of less than savory stallions and running every one of them off when they objected physically.  She is also both a supplier and customer of the Apple family, helping carve the Big Red Stallion's yoke.  She has had one or two encounters with the local Weather Captain, mostly less-than-friendly ones involving high-speed collision and minor property damage.  She has also met the Local Librarian through Feather Scroll.  Like literally EVERYPONY, she is "happy friends" with the local Confection Maker and self-proclaimed Party Planner, although her patience is strained when some of the pink pony's antics create damage to her wares.

Species:Unicorn

Gender:Stallion

Age:46

Physique:Strong and firmly built, yet dainty, with low endurance

Cutie Mark:Triple Crown

Talent:Carrying on family legacy, unknown

Mane/Tail Color:Blue

Mane Style:Formally Combed and Firm

Coat Color:White

Eye Color:Blue

Occupation:Aristocrat/noble

Personality Traits:Very compassionate and patient, but sheltered and unfamiliar with the world beyond the bubble of high society he lives in. He is not easily cowed, having served as a part of the Equestrian Royal Guard in the past, but prefers to talk things out, and if possible leave the fighting to his servants and bodyguards.  He has a reputation for generosity and making friends with ponies from Ponyville, and for always keeping his word.  He is impeccably polite to everypony, and is close as family with his own servants, who call him Master out of love and admiration rather than necessity.

Other Information:Expert swordspony, insanely rich, dabbles in painting, philosophy, hiking, swimming, archery, gentleman's martial arts, literature, calligraphy, poetry, and a number of other high-class and expensive hobbies.  He owns a large collection of valuable items.  Best friends with Sir Green Strokes.   Philanthropist and investor, if there exists a public or charitable facility in Equestria, it was probably funded largely by him.  He is extremely remorseful of his past and is easily depressed when the subject is brought up.

Biography:The firstborn son and heir to the Pants Estate, he spent his foalhood swimming in luxury few could even dream of.  Yet for all his wealth, he was not in the least bit spoiled, for his father, Fancy the Fourth, believed that wealth and power alone was not enough, and that influence through proper behaviour and charisma was necessary for the continued dominance of the Pants family amongst the aristocracy.  As such, the young Fancy spent much of his early years under the stern gaze of private tutors, and as his father was often out building up the family's influence, under the care and guidance of his nanny Pearl and butler bodyguard Bloodblade.  He also met and became good friends with the now Sir Green Strokes, with whom he shared many fun and interesting adventures around the estate.  Sometime during his training he realized it was his destiny and duty to carry on the Pants name, and received his Cutie Mark in this way.  After coming of age, he was sent off to the Royal Military Academy to train to be an officer like any proper noble, and for several years he served as part of the Royal Guard.  During this interval he fought off several assassins, earning him a knighting.  It was the last of these assassinations in which he and Green Strokes fought off several changeling spies, and the two of them decided to use the passphrase "Canterlot Mountain" to refer to shapeshifting dangers and the need for secrecy.  After leaving the military, he parted ways with his old friend, who sought to go journey around the world to get new insights.  As he copleted his father's "training", he was introduced to La Famille Fleur De Lis, the family assassins.  What followed were a grim and unfortunate series of events involving family feuds and assassinations, with Fancy succeeding his father in dark manners.  During this dark time, an expert assassin known only as Lovelace managed to seduce her way into Fancy's trust, and in his moment of vulnerability nearly ruined him.  His dark actions after this, and their tragic consequences, is related in the tale entitled Sweet and Elite: A Game of Shadows and its sequels.  In the years following that dark time, he sought to undo the many atrocities he and his family had inflicted, funding schools, hospitals, libraries, orphanages, and many other organizations as penace for his wrongdoings.  During this time of increasing influence and generosity he met Ponyville's fashion designer and her friends, and also invited many nobles to his estate for dinner parties.  In the end, however, all this could not pay for his sins, and as his old froend Sir Green Strokes returned from his journeys, assassins once again sought to end the Pants line.  That story is related in the tale entitled Sweet and Elite: A Lover's Last Legacy.  Now, having gained a new outlook on life, Fancy is setting out with his old friend Sir Green Strokes and several of his other noble friends, and the would-be assassin Chirp, on a pilgramige of self-discovery and adventure whichwill take him far beyond the borders of Equestria.  This tale is currently being written under the title Pants and Strokes Adventures: Journeys Beyond Equestria.

New OCs:

Name: Lord Fancy Pants (the First)
Age: 30

(Optional)
Backstory: Born to an average family of nobles, the young Fancy was raised to follow in the hoofsteps of his father.  His family was certainly not the most wealthy, but he spent the majority of his youth under the stern yet kind gaze of his private tutor and caretaker.  Sometime during his training he realized it was his destiny and duty to carry on the Pants name and lead the family to greatness, and received his Cutie Mark in this way.  After coming of age, he was sent off to the Royal Military Academy to train to be an officer like any proper noble, and for several years he served as part of the Royal Guard.  During this interval he earned knighthood for a minor feat of service to the Crown.  Now, as a knighted guard of the Royal Sisters, his task carries him to the farthest reaches of the map in search of fertile land.
Practical abilities: He can fight very well, knows reading and writing and the sciences, fluent in various languages, and took classes in surveying and map-making.

Age: 28
Gender: Stallion
Race: Earth
Personality: Friendly, honest, practical, hospitable, polite
Fears: having his family taken from him
Talent: Growing berries
(Optional)
Backstory: Born to the humble Blossom family of farmers, he found his cutiemark quickly working the fields.  Though he isn't too educated in the "noble studies" of math or reading, he knows enough to read the almanac and can do calculations for selling berries in his head, converting from bushels to bits and from bits to berries.  He married Willow Amber, one of his neighbors, soon after he came of age, and started a small family.  Now that the family's grown, he accepted the Princesses' offer to go find new land.  He is a pioneer and a homesteader, and wants to search out new land for his family to farm.
Practical Abilities:  He is good at finding edible things in the wild and gathering wood, as well as making fire and other practical things.  He can also tell the seasons and the weather.  He knows enough about animals to know when to run, and can read the bird's paths across the sky to find water. He has some basic knowledge of the stars and can blaze a trail well enough day or night.

Name: Willow Amber Blossom
Age: 26
Gender: Mare
Race: Earth
Personality: Kind, motherly, caring, hard working, honest, strict with her foals
Fears: harm to her husband or her family
Talent: brewing medicines
(Optional)

Practical Abilities: She is good at medicine and brewing stews, and can provide both food and medical services for the group.

The Wandering Magus

A speech by Feather, that I'm somewhat proud of:

Quote from: The Wandering Magus on 2012 Sep 03, 20:21:10
The blue pony looked over the crowd.  When he spoke, his voice was soft, but the amplification spell made it audible and discernible to everypony in the audience.

"Thank you, Headmaster Crescent, and good evening, everypony."

The illusions behind the podium shifted into a calm background showing a map of Equestria and the surrounding nations.

"Several decades ago, my father, Lightning Scroll, postulated that all magic, regardless of origin, was intrinsically the same.  The academia of his time believed that Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn magic, were completely incompatible with each other.  Needless to say, this caused quite a bit of friction between the three races here.

"I know that many of you continue to experience the effects and legacy of that period."

He paused for a moment.  The map flickered as it showed images of riots, protests and the infamous Occupy Manehattan movement.

"However dark those times, my father never gave up his vision of both a unified magic system and a unified Equestria.  As I began my elementary education, he encouraged me to interact with ponies of many different races, and non-ponies as well.  As I learned about other cultures and the thought processes of ponies who had lived lives in many ways similar and different to my own, I never forgot the words my father spoke to me.

"He took me aside as I complained about this and that, as many foals did and still do, and looked me in the eye and said, 'It's not the body that defines an individual, but the content of that individual's character.'"
Quote from: The Wandering Magus on 2012 Sep 03, 20:52:49
Feather continued after a pause.

"My father fought for education for each and every individual, regardless of race and gender.  Now, decades later, for the first time Pegasus and Earth Pony attendance at this Academy reached a full thirty percent of the total population among students and faculty.  I would like to congratulate all of you for making this possible, through your hard work and dedication to education.  Headmaster Crescent has already pointed out that this is just the beginning of years of wonder and discovery each of you will pass through on your way to the graduation podium.  Yet as we sit here, in an auditorium which only a generation ago was closed to non-unicorns, I ask each of you, both faculty and student, to consider this:

"The elements which make up our bodies, the magic which binds our atoms together, are all the same magic.  It is the same magic which binds the world together, and which allows plants to grow and clouds to be created.  In my research, I have proven the compatibility and interchangeable nature of every single type of magic.  We are, ultimately, all comprised of the same thing.

"Magic.  It is our lifeblood.  The Princesses Themselves, Their Names be praised, use magic to raise the Sun and Moon each day.  When we set aside our differences and examine our similarities, we can see just how closely we are bound to each other.  Let us never forget that we are all Academics, that we are all ultimately magic.

"As we start a new year, I acknowledge the ponies here are the best of the best.  The students who come here are privileged to have the guidance of masters of each field of study and research as they learn.  Yet I would also ask each one of you to never forget that you are still of the same substance as less privileged ponies.

Your years here will pass swiftly.  Each day will seem tedious, yes, but most of you will fly through in the span of eight years, holding doctorates and degrees.  When you finish your studies, you will be helping build and shape the world.  What world will you build?"

The illusions flickered, and shaped into the Shield of the Academy.

"The future of the world lies in your hooves.  Whether you will shape the world positively or negatively is your decision, but regardless of what decision you make, you will shape it.  Today, I have the honor of welcoming four thousand six hundred and fifty three new students to the Royal Academy of Magic, and I hope to walk alongside each and every one of you towards your goals and dreams.

Once again, congratulations on a new year here at the Royal Academy of Magic!"

QuoteConcerning Spell Matrices, Magitronics and Inter-Magical Forces.

To fully understand the complex idea of Spell Matrices, one must first consider the very definition of Magic itself.  Until recently, the specialized magics of different living things such as griffons, zebras and ponies have long been regarded as entirely separate phenomena which had no relation whatsoever with each other.  To that end, countless journals and manuscripts have been written detailing the specific properties of each field, but never comparing results or attempting to explain some overarching principle.  Alchemy, for example, would have been considered completely self-contained, and no amount of persuasion would have convinced a weather pony that it had any similarity at all beyond superficial points with weather magic.  It was during the transitional period of Equestria, around the time the Trans-Equestrian Railway was first being built, that Lightning Scroll, a professor at the Royal Academy of Magic, postulated that all magic, regardless of origin, was fundamentally the same.  He spent the next several years attempting to prove his theory, but it was his son, Feather Scroll, who formulated the Scroll Equations and the General Theory of Inter-Magical Forces.  His equations and theory were the first such models to successfully compare and predict the behavior of different forms of magic in relation to each other relative to the theoretical fundamental unit of magical energy, the magitron.  This revolutionized the entire world of magical research and created an entirely new branch of magic known academically as Inter-Magical Forces.  Colloquially, this branch is known simply as Magitronics, named somewhat justifiably after the magitron.  Machines soon developed which utilized the properties predicted by the Scroll Equations through specialized networks of interconnected spells held together and channeled by tiny rune-inscribed pieces of jade and opal, commonly referred to as runestones, or simply Runes.  Due to the superficial similarity between these networked spells and the colloquial understanding of matrices, the machines and spell engines soon became known as Spell Matrices, or simply Matrices.  The effectiveness of any such Matrix depends greatly on the preciseness with which it is built.  High-quality devices used in research, for example, are accurate to within single magitrons, and can be powerful enough to create devastating effects.  As such, researchers are required by law to register for licenses before being allowed to begin construction of such delicate yet powerful matrices.  Common entertainment matrices, by contrast, can be millions of magitrons off without affecting performance.  Note that accuracy has little to do with size; weak magitronic toys and gift cards may be as small as a tenth of a hoof in diameter, whereas construction matrices may be as large as small houses.  Complexity and spell resonance frequencies are also factors which may affect the size, preciseness and power of a Spell Matrix.

lionheart

i have so gotta try my hoof at this, thought about writing a fan-fic about my oc but came down with a case of lazy-itis=/. Thought about making it about how his "master" would constantly take credit for lionhearts accomplishments, then threateaned him with failing his test to become a full knight should lionheart speak up about his mentor abusing his position of power. or something like that, just a thought  ;)

Midnight Breeze

Goodness, bro. You really need to clean up the bio charts, it's almost unreadable.  :I

But barring that, I'd say you've got some healthy characters here. I could really see them fitting into the FiM universe. I'm glad to see there are still some OCs that aren't demigods.  lol

I don't see any particular point on either of them that needs to be called out, they are well written, and as always I love seeing healthy Earth Pony OCs.
